Buenos Aires is known for its outstanding nightlife.  The city offers a wide range of activities such as open air parties in the Planetarium to the world famous boliches or nightclubs such as Terrazas del Este, Pacha, Jet, and many more.  There is, however, a great bar scene in the capital of Argentina as well.

As a former resident of Manhattan, I used to love to check out one of the many “speakeasies” located in the Big Apple.  This past week, I decided to do some research about speakeasies here in Buenos Aires.  I went this past week to one such speakeasy here in Buenos Aires — 878 Bar.

Located at the corner of Thames and Loyola, the bar is known for its hard to spot door and upscale clientele.  When you head out to 878 Bar, be prepared to enter through what looks like a regular apartment entrance.  During the week, there is usually no doorman and on the weekends, a doorman stands discretely to the side of a nearby grocery store.  I myself had walked past 878 many times on the way to visit friends who live in the area.  When it first opened up, many people were not even aware of its existence.

After being ushered in by the doorman, we were greeted immediately by an attentive hostess.  As we were a small group (and fortunately passing muster with the hostess), we were informed that there were two parts to the bar: the main room and the even more secretive “inner room.”  We ambled up to the main bar and ordered some delicious specialty cocktails that 878 is well known for.  The main room also had tables for dinner.

We were then escorted into the inner room, behind a metal wall that looked like the entrance to a store room.  I enjoyed chatting with my friends on one of the many spacious couches in the back.  There was also a fully stocked bar in that room as well.

I would highly recommend this bar as a great place to hang out with friends or to take a date.  It has received consistently high reviews in such places as World’s Best Bars and Time Out.
