8 Paleo Snacks for Halloween

It is that time again. Get ready for a parade of bright packages of sugar-laden, preservative filled candy making their way into the American bloodstream. Yes, you guessed right! It is October, and Halloween is around the corner. What will YOU put in your pumpkin this year? Paleo snacks? Yes, healthy snacks can be had on Halloween.

What will YOU put in your Paleo plastic pumpkin?

While candy is fun to eat and satisfies many anxious nerve endings in our bodies, the results of over consumption of sugar are more than universally known to be fatal. You do not need us to tell you about the dangers of sugar addiction: acne, high blood pressure, empty calories, and diabetes are just some of the chaotic things surfacing in our youths these days.

It is not just candy, though: it is the abuse of foods made with sugar, preserved with sugar, or made to taste well by sugar.  And, still, here comes Halloween!  What exactly are we supposed to do against a mainstream that sets us up for health failure?

Options

In the Paleo lifestyle, processed sugar, or added sugar of any kind, is off limits. It is not a capricious thing. We emulate the diet of our ancestors, and sugar was not a part of it.  Any wonder why they did not suffer the common maladies raising our health care costs through the roof in modern days?

In reality, there are hundreds of naturally healthy foods that you can alter in ways to enhance or altogether change their flavor in the most natural ways.

Here are some awesome Paleo snack options:

Crispy-baked banana chips- Bananas already come in dried form, but check the contents of those pre-packaged bags before you open. You can dehydrate and bake your own banana chips, adding cinnamon, coconut chips, and even raw honey to drizzle.

These chips are naturally sweet and will intensify their flavor during the dehydration and baking processes. They are crunchy too!

Raw honey almond clusters- Made together in the slow cooker, they can be mixed with coconut flakes and even cocoa crumbs to make them chocolaty.

Dehydrated fruit snacks- Strawberries, apples, cranberries and anything juicy can be made into flavorful flakes. Put them in baggies and pass them around as treats!

Dark chocolate covered bacon- Prime grade, natural bacon pairs beautifully with melted, dark cacao. Fry or toast the bacon first, then melt or fondue the chocolate, and pour over. Let it dry on parchment paper and add sea salt to taste (optional)

“Apple pie chips” – Use a mandoline to slice thin green apples. Dehydrate or bake them after sprinkling them with cinnamon and clarified butter. Dry them up, serve them warm or at room temperature.

Almond butter buckeyes- Roll almond butter and melted cacao, or dark chocolate, together.  Place on parchment paper and let cool. It is a delicious treat packed with protein.

Cherry jellies- Mix zero flavor gelatin with boiled, red sweet cherries and bring to a boil. Place in funny molds and refrigerate. It looks like wiggly, red, scary stuff.

Frozen juice pops- It may be October, but who does not enjoy an old-fashioned popsicle at a party? Add all-natural ingredients to fresh water, including mint and lemon juice. Freeze in molds with popsicle sticks and enjoy.
