7 Tips to Make Your Lawn Greener This Spring

By Gfl

Spring is finally on its way, and with it comes green grass. But sometimes green isn’t enough. Sometimes even the lushest lawns can have sparse, patchy spots. So how can you get a greener lawn this spring? Here are 7 easy tips to keep your lawn looking greener!

1. Take Care of Weeds Right Away!

You don’t need to be told what sort of havoc weeds can wreak on green lawns. They can lead to grass wilting and dying, which causes unsightly brown or bald patches on your lawn. Weeding can be a pain, but if you pull up weeds the moment they start, not only can you prevent wilting and death, but you can stop weeds from spreading their seeds.

If you prefer, you can also use ‘weed and feed’ mixes to both kill off weeds and feed your lawn.

2. Mow Frequently and on High Settings

Just like cutting hair frequently can encourage your hair to look healthier, cutting your lawn frequently can help it to look greener and healthier.

Mowing your lawn on a high setting, leaving the grass at least 3 inches tall, will help it retain moisture throughout the day, ensuring that your lawn will be well-watered and looking green!

3. Keep the Blade of Your Mower Sharp

Though it may sound like general advice, keeping the blades of your mower sharp is crucial to having a great, green lawn. If you cut your grass with dull blades, it damages the ends, causing the grass to lose its chlorophyll. Using a sharp blade doesn’t cause damage to the blades of grass, and allows it to retain the chlorophyll. This leaves your grass looking greener.

4. Water Your Grass in the Morning

Watering your grass early in the morning is the best time to water. Keeping water on the blades of your grass can lead to ideal conditions for diseases. Watering for long periods of time, allowing the water to soak deep into the soil, but less often is best. And watering in the early morning allows the sun to gently dry the blades of grass as it warms up.

5. Keep Your Lawn Well Fed

Feeding your lawn a mix of both slow and quick release fertilizers that are high in nitrogen will lead to lush, green lawns. In the north, you’ll want to feed your grass in both the fall and spring. In the south, you’ll want to feed the grass through spring and summer.

6. Overseed and Reseed Your Lawn

When planting your lawn, it’s important to overseed so that your lawn is ultra-lush. You can’t go wrong with overseeding. If you notice your lawn becoming patchy or sparse, don’t fret – just reseed. Reseeding is great when you want to lush up your lawn without introducing too many chemicals.

7. Designate Areas for Your Dog to ‘Go’

If you have pets your lawn will show it. But what can you do? You love your furry (or fluffy) pals. The solution is easy! Designate a gravel or mulch area for your dog to do his business.

Some people even fence off small sections of their lawn just for their animals to ‘go’. These are fairly inexpensive to build and can save you a lot of time and headache, and save your grass for yellow and bald patches.
Training your pets to use only certain sections of the lawn is quite similar to house training them.

So if you think the grass is looking greener on the other side of the fence, use these 7 easy tips to get your grass from green to greener!
