In the backyard of a residence in San Francisco’s Noe Valley, the local landscape architecture firm Surfacedesign cleverly hid an outdoor hot tub behind a beautiful ipe wood shell. “Given the modest budget, we knew we weren’t going to be creating a custom soaking pool,” says principal Roderick Wyllie. “But it’s also the kind of thing we love to do—take off-the-shelf materials and make something that feels crafted and personal.”
