Spamming

Spamming has many faces. If you use your Twitter account to only promote your blog posts, promote products, force people to view web pages or direct message everyone to buy your product, then you will definitely end up in one category – spammers.  No one wants to see posts like “GET MORE FOLLOWERS” or “EBOOK DISCOUNTS” over and over again appearing on the Twitter feed.  Personally, I just block people who constantly post such tweets and send me DM’s asking to checkout their book or follow their brand page. This might also happen to you if you keep spamming on your Twitter.

Solution – If you’re going to promote your product or blog posts, at least mix it up with other tweets and valuable contents. Share quality information and express yourself. Also avoid constant retweeting and promoting other twitter accounts.

Excessive Use of the #Hashtag

I’m not sure if turning every word into a Hashtag is a trend or something, but it’s really annoying. Hashtags are great to discover certain topics on Twitter. But it’s not going to be very useful when you use with all your tweets like “Life is hard #ImSoDepressed”. It’s just going to make it even harder to read your post and annoy your followers.

Solution – Stop using the #hashtag with every word. And immediately stop using Hashtags like #TeamFollowBack or #FollowFriday with every one of your tweets. Only use the proper tags related to your tweet. For example if you’re talking about the new iPhone, use the #iPhone5 tag at the end of your tweet. It’s simple as that.

Not Completing the Bio

Not having an attractive bio on your Twitter profile can cost you a lot of followers who comes to your profile page wondering to learn about you and what you do. Copy- pasting a brilliant quote or a part from a song is not going to work for this.

Solution – Narrow down your interests and your work to few words, and give a reason for people to follow you. Tell them about what you usually tweet. Provide a link to your blog or website (if you have any).

Using Automation Tools

Most of the big time business people and bloggers usually use automation tools to auto send Dm’s to whoever follows them and also to autofollow their followers.  This is really bad. When you start to reach a bigger audience, lots of spammers and bots will start to follow you. When using automation tools you will follow these fake profiles as well. Also, sending out automated welcome messages via DM will probably get you unfollowed or blocked.

Solution – If you want to appreciate your followers. Take few minutes off your day to go through all those new followers to only followback legitimate users or mention them in a tweet.

Making Twitter Your Diary

Most users thinks that Twitter is like Facebook. A place to share their personal and private information. But it’s not. Twitter is not a social network, it’s a micro-blogging network. So, tweeting things like “I’m doing homework” or “I love my girlfriend” is not going to entertain your followers. It will only make them bored, including your girlfriend as well. If your followers gets annoyed and bored with your frequent whining and personal updates, they will eventually decide to unfollow you.

Solution – Like I said earlier, mix your tweets. Combine your links and promotions with mixed content like quotes, questions, humor, pictures, videos and occasional personal life updates. And always remember to connect with other users, retweet their updates and reply.
