5 Tips for Aspiring Freelance Copywriters and Bloggers

Posted on the 25 May 2015 by Andreaantal @andreaeantal
Turning any hobby into a career comes with its rewards and challenges. Last week, I had the opportunity to share some tips on becoming a freelance writer with the Students of WMA. Naturally, the list could go on and on, but here are my (current) top five:1) Create a portfolio.Your portfolio gives you credibility, illustrates your experience, and showcases your writing style(s).2) Edit, edit, and edit some more! Always look at your work with fresh eyes. You’d be surprised how many times you’ll find a typo or a better way to convey a message in your third round of editing that you missed before.3) Don’t be too hard on yourself.Writers are often their own worst critic, especially when crafting content they are not all that interested in or familiar with (and you’ll find that’s the majority of work you’ll be getting paid to write!)4) Find a niche. If you enjoy writing social media posts, why not offer your specialized services to a marketing agency? If you are great at writing financial reports, you can always state that as your area of expertise.  There’s a whole world of content – you don’t have to do it all! Focus on what you do best and are most comfortable with, and then expand your services as you grow.5) Find time for your passion.Turning any hobby into a job comes with its rewards and challenges. I strongly urge writers to make time to fuel their passion, whether it’s through their blog, poetry, or memoir! You’ll find that as clients come onboard, you’ll be writing less about topics that interest you in order to make way for content that pays the bills.Do you have any tips for those wanting to turn their hobby into a career?
