5 Reasons Why Dubliners Should Visit San Sebastian.

By Thedublindiary @TheDublinDiary
Did you know you could be in Spain in less than two hours? San Sebastian, or Donestia as it's called in Basque, is on Spain's northern coast between Bilbao and Biarritz. Their weather is changeable like ours in Dublin but temperatures reach 20C and above in summertime. But you're not going to visit San Sebastian for the weather, there's a whole heap of other reasons to go. Check out my top five reason to visit this region below.

1. Easy Access.

You could be here in less than three hours!

Bilbao can be reached from Dublin in under two hours with Aer Lingus. The bus to San Sebastian leaves from outside the terminal and takes just over an hour. It's an easy 10 minute walk to the old town from the bus station or there are plenty of taxi's if you don't fancy the walk.

2. Pintxo's

Something for every palate, except maybe the vegetarian!

Sometimes trying food in a foreign country can be a daunting especially if you don't speak the language. This isn't the case in San Sebastian. Pintxo's are laid out on the bar counter for you to choose from. Get a plate from the bartender, pick what you like and pay. As most pintxo's only cost €2 it doesn't really matter if you end up with one you don't like! We went armed with recommendations but that's not really necessary, just pop in anywhere, they're all good! Saying that Txalupa on Fermin Calbetón was my favourite!

3. Cheap

Great wine for next to nothing!

When I say cheap what I'm really talking about here is cheap wine! A good Crianza will set you back no more than €3 and that's the most expensive! We found places offering glasses of wine for as little as €1.75 and it was very, very good! If red isn't your thing then try the local dry white wine called Txakoli or even a cider which the region is famous for. Albarino and Rueda are also popular among locals.

4. La Concha Beach

The beautiful La Concha Bay.

Measuring over a kilometer and a half La Concha Beach dominates the bay at San Sebastian. Locals use it for sun bathing, playing tennis, volleyball, swimming and surfing. Every weekend local kids flock to the beach to play football where Xabi Alonso and Mikell Arteta are said to have honed their skills. Can you see yourself spending some time here?

5. Bilbao

The Guggenheim Bilbao.

As I said you are only an hour from Bilbao so you could easily take a day trip and visit the Guggenheim or the fine arts museum. The old town is beautiful to wander around during the day and at night the place is hopping! Pintxo crawl anyone?
Of course there are many more reasons why you should visit so if these have whetted your appetite then get researching! If anyone wants advice or suggestions be sure to drop me an email at thedublindiary <at> gmail <dot> com
