Famous for its historical sites and spectacular beaches, Turkey has many tourist attractions that ensure a fun-filled holiday vacation. Here are five of them that you should not miss.
Imagine a glorious spectacle of white terraces made of sedimentary rocks. There are pools on the white terraces. That’s Pamukkale, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a popular tourist attraction in Turkey. Pamukkale, Turkish for “cotton castle,” is a surreal natural landscape located in southwestern Turkey. The pools on the white terraces have high mineral content, and people have bathed in them for thousands of years. Also, expect to find hot springs and limestone walls in Pamukkale.
The Blue Mosque sports six minarets and majestic architecture. Situated in Istanbul and built in the 1600s, this historic Turkish attraction and place of worship entreats with an opulent interior lined with thousands and thousands of blue tiles that are adorned by various patterns. Find the mihrab, the central element in the mosque. It is a beautifully carved marble with a stalactite recess.
The city of Bodrum is an absolute must-see should you go to Turkey. Bodrum is home to the breathtaking fifteenth-century Bodrum Castle and the Mausoleum of Mausolus, which is one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World. Other popular sites in Bodrum include the Theatre of Halicarnassus and the Castle of St. Peter.
Mount Nemrut, another UNESCO World Heritage Site in Turkey, can be reached by land or through a helicopter. The 7,000-ft-tall mountain is known for the huge statues arranged around what is believed to be a royal tomb that dates back from the first century BC. Parts of the statues have been defaced because of an iconoclasm, or the act of damaging religious icons for either religious or political intents. When you visit Mount Nemrut, you will also find stone slabs decorated with figures in bas-relief.
Found along the coast of the Turkish Riviera, Patara Beach will complete your memorable holiday vacation in Turkey. Walk along the soft sandy beach that stretches for eleven miles and frolic in the shallow waters. The area is protected because endangered sea turtles are known to leave their eggs there. Patara Beach is near several ancient archeological sites, as well as an outcrop that overlooks a stunning rocky cove.
