Did you know you can buy the perfect engagement ring in five easy steps? You can and I’m going to show you how to do it.

Yes, I want to make it as EASY as possible for you to buy an engagement ring, and not just any ring, but a custom engagement ring. One that your gal will swoon over.
Five Steps to Buy a Perfect Engagement Ring
- Set a budget. Don’t step one foot out of the door until you set a budget. Look at your bank account and see what you can afford. Figure out how much you can put down, because just like a car, you will have to put some money down when you buy a ring. Can you put it on a credit card? If you have the ability, yes you generally can. Can you finance it? Possibly. If you aren’t sure, you can always run a free credit report to see what type of credit you have first before you try to get financing from the place you are going to buy the diamond from. But, set your budget and stick to it!
- Gather intel. Find out the size of your girlfriends finger and write it down or swipe an old ring she won’t notice missing. Another thing you can do is take a ring and make an impression of it in some silly putty or soap. Find out what shape of diamond you or she wants and then start to think about diamond DNA. Start to look at different settings and types of metals. Make a cheat sheet that you can take with you and keep all your notes on. Print out pictures of different styles you like as well and be sure to take those photos with you too.
- Find your seller. Whether you go for a face to face with a wholesaler like me, a retailer, or an online place make sure they check out with the Better Business Bureau and that you are comfortable with them. Be sure you know about their return policy, trade in policy, repair policy, cleaning policy, how long they have been in business and ask for references if you can. You might want to even ask them where they get their diamonds from, in other words, do they have a stock of diamonds or do they get their stones from other diamond dealers? Can they get the job done for you on time and will they show you other jobs they have done?
- Do some diamond shopping! Now is the fun stuff! Time to go and diamond shop. Pick your diamond and pick the one that talks to you. Choose your metal and then choose your setting. Within this time frame, from choosing your diamond and getting it all worked out, you will tell your timeline to your diamond salesperson and they will lay out what will happen next. Generally, you will first get a cad rendering of your ring sent to you via email. Then you will get to see a wax casting of the ring, where you will actually get to see the center stone and side stones in it. The final step will be the finished product!
- Plan the Engagement. Now you just have to take the time between picking up your ring and giving it to your darling to implement and plan the perfect engagement.
