4/10 – Half Marathon Training

By Christopher Orr @BlkSwmpRunnr

Thursdays are rough.

With an advanced legal research class early, it squeezes my time for running in the mornings. But I am a creature of habit and don’t like it if I skip a day, even Thursdays. So, knowing that I’m already behind the 8-ball timewise, I went out to the Rec Center for my training run.

After the more intense training runs this week, I knew an easy run was on the horizon. Even though the time issue was going to be a factor (and it was), today’s run was a slow 5 miler.

Before setting out on the track, I played around on my shiny iPod and made a fun new playlist for today. Since the run didn’t need to stay at a quick pace I just threw together a list of songs I like and hadn’t heard in a long time (hello, Ask DNA).

Pre-workout: Vanilla Bean GU

I still love Vanilla Bean GU. The fruity GU tour is nearing an end, and I know from last year’s Columbus Marathon that I’m not a big fan of lemon-lime and tri-berry is always a toss of the dice (and I wasn’t feeling lucky this morning).

The variety box of GU was a good deal, but I don’t think I’ll go back to it again. The idea of collecting dozens of lemon-lime GUs is not fun. Unless I suddenly find somebody who wants to trade lemon-lime & tri-berry for chocolate & espresso, the new plan will be go back to Dave’s Running and buy single GU packets in bulk.

Workout: 5 mile easy run

The days are getting longer and the sky is getting brighter earlier. I’m hoping that morning trail runs will become a thing again in the near future. I’ve held out on buying a headlamp, but I still want to run outside…

Since it was slow pace run (average pace of 8:00/mi), I got to listen to some of my old music. That was a nice treat. I would have liked to put a few more miles in today, but I needed to get off the track and into class. So when this game of musical chairs ended I had finished 5 miles.

Tomorrow will be another time-crunched morning since we have a painter coming to undo the work of the previous painter. The likely plan will involve doing a double tomorrow – morning run on my own, then hopefully an evening run with Stacy.
