4 Unique Attractions to See in North DakotaThere's a unique pride that emanates from people from North Dakota. My dad is from North Dakota, and he always manages to find the person in the room from his home state and talk with them for hours about the beauties of and fondness for the state. I have never really given much thought to traveling to North Dakota just for fun, but the more I read about the wide variety of things to do the more I think a visit may be in order.

Although there is far more to see and do in North Dakota than can be outlined in just one article, the following are a few of the top attractions I am looking forward to checking out when we make it to this lesser-visited state. (Photo "Reuben's Barn" by Snoshuu)

Travel the Lewis and Clark Trail

Get a glimpse of history along this massive trail that spans 11 states and 3700 miles. Consider driving, biking, or even boating along this trail filled with historic sites and visitor centers. Some of the sites include the burial site of Sitting Bull, remains of former Indian villages, and Fort Mandan, a winter camp of Lewis and Clark.

You might be surprised to find out that North Dakota is home to many vineyards. In addition to traditional wine made from grapes, many vineyards also make wine using other fruits grown in North Dakota like cherries, plums, rhubarb, and berries. Another interesting and growing area of tourism in North Dakota is agritourism. With farmland making up nearly 90% of the land in the state, tourists can easily find farms that allow visitors to lodge on the property and even participate in farm work to get a better understanding of the day to day operations on a farm. Explore the Beauty of National and State Parks

Perhaps the most famous natural site in North Dakota is the Badlands. These geologic formations carved out over millions of years by rivers can be seen along the scenic loop drives through Theodore Roosevelt National Park. Besides these iconic land formations, there are many other historic and natural sites to see across more than a dozen state parks. History buffs will love exploring General George Custer's reconstructed home in Fort Abraham Lincoln State Park, while nature lovers will enjoying hiking to the top of one of the many buttes like Bullion Butte for spectacular views. Those just wanting to kick back and relax can find many lakes for boating including the popular Lake Sakakawea.

Experience Native American Culture and History

With its vast and fertile lands, North Dakota has been home to several Native American tribes including the Dakota, Nakota Sioux, Lakota Sioux, and many more. Although the tribes have decreased in size over the years, there are still four remaining and recognized tribes, including the Spirit Lake Sioux, Standing Rock Sioux, Three Affiliated Tribes, and the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa. These tribes offer great opportunities for visitors to learn more about Native American culture and history while also taking in North Dakota's beautiful natural scenery.

In September 2015, Bismarck will host the annual United Tribes International Powwow where over 70 tribes will come together with performances from over 1,000 dancers, drummers, and other historical demonstrations.

From the natural beauty, rich history, to the food and dining options available, North Dakota has a wide offering of activities that we look forward to taking in during a visit.
