In today’s post I bring to you 4 ubtan recipes for moms this Diwali!

Ubtan is a paste form application used for beautification of face and body. It provides a bright glow to the skin and improves complexion as well.

There are wide varieties of ubtans used in India. I have used the simple and available ingredients from kitchen.

Fall in Love With Your Skin This Diwali Using Our 4 Ubtan Recipes:

Last Diwali we had shifted to our new house. New neighbors, new shops, new place !

The flatmates were so cooperative. So cooperative to the extend that they would barge in to your house even without an invitation. Their warmth and love was unconditional.

Many were interested to know if we had a love marriage and if I could speak Marathi Some even tried conversing in Malayalam to me, which I stopped as I couldn’t stand my mother tongue being murdered

The night before Diwali as I was readying Anshika’s bed, I heard a knock on the door. I opened to see a gang of small children wishing me “Happy Diwali Auntyyyy “.  At the same they sneaked in, carried Anshika in their arms and started playing with her.  The all sleepy Anshika charged up and began to play with them. I got bugged

As I was trying my level best to shoo them away literally out of the house, one of them handed over to me 2-3 packets of some brown powder. I asked him “Whats this beta?”. He answered ” Ubtann hein aunty”.

Ubtan? Yeah I know what is ubtan, but why he handed over this to me now.

Looking at my puzzled expression, he continued, “Arrey aunty, yaha pe heina ubtan lagaake phir nahaate hein Diwali ki subah” which meant it is supposed to be applied before the bath on Diwali morning.

The children left, I managed to make Anshika sleep and the powder got my attention. I loved the fragrance, the rustic feel and the goodness in it. The next day morning I used it on my body and voila, I got a soft, smooth and supple skin!

This Diwali we are shifted to another flat, but memories of my previous Diwali is with me. Hence came up with today’s post on the ubtan recipes for moms.

Ubtan Tradition During Diwali in Mumbai:

In the ceremonial bath taken at the break of dawn during Diwali, ubtan is applied all over the face and body. Ubtan acts as a scrub and mild cleanser. It also removes the dirt, dead cells, grime from body and face.

#1. Turmeric – Sesame Ubtan:

This is one of the simplest ubtans you can make at home for yourself. In fact my Maharashtrian friend asked his mom about this ubtan recipe and he got me all the ingredient list

The two ingredients are turmeric and sesame seeds.

Benefits of Sesame seeds:

Sesame oil is also knows as the Queen of oils due to following qualities:

  • Anti inflammatory properties
  • Contains essential fatty acids like palmitic, oiliec and stearic acid making it an excellent moisturizer
  • Prevents dry skin
  • Improves blood circulation
  • Prevents sun tan
  • Prevent wrinkles
  • Prevents black heads, fade dark spots and pimples
  • High zinc content helps to repair damaged body tissues

Benefits of Turmeric:

  • Anti bacterial
  • Anti fungal
  • Skin brightening
  • Skin clearing
  • Fights acne
  • Fades dark spots and marks

Take 1 tablespoon of turmeric powder and add 2-3 teaspoons of sesame seeds. Grind it to a fine paste with a little water.

Apply it on your face and body. Wash off when it dries. A smooth, silky and bright glowy skin is ensured

I used Kasthuri Manjal instead of the usual turmeric here.

#2. Turmeric, Sandalwood with Sesame Oil:

Add 1 tablespoon of powder each and to it add 2-3 teaspoons of sesame oil until it forms a fine paste.

#3. Turmeric, Sandalwood, Rice Flour, Gram Flour with Rose water and Sesame Oil:

Add 1/2 tablespoon of each powder and mix it with 1-2 drops of rose water and sesame seed oil. Mix well and apply it on your face and body before bath.

I used red sandalwood powder which helps in fading the dark spots. You can use the usual sandal wood powder too.

Rose water is a natural toner and moisturizer.

Besan or gram flour helps in cleansing and tightening your skin. Sesame seed oil moisturizes.

This ubtan can be used on an weekend basis to ensure complexion and preventing sun tan.

#4. Turmeric, Sandalwood, Rice Flour, Gram Flour with Rose Water and Milk Cream/Malai:

Milk cream or malai helps to lighten the skin.

Add 1/2 tablespoon of powders and add 1-2 tsps. of rose water and malai . Mix well to form a fine paste.

NOTE:

  • Always patch test for allergies. Even natural products can result in allergies or skin rashes if you have sensitive skin
  • I DO NOT recommend the usage of these ubtans on babies or kids below 8 years as their skin is supple and 8 times thinner and delicate than the adults’ skin
  • You can also make ubtan with multani mitti, dahi, red lentil paste, honey or milk whatever ingredients you have at home.
