3D Printed Jewelry Debuts on the Runway

By Raymondleejewelers @raymondleejwlrs

3D printers are all the rage right now. They essentially allow us to create anything we like just so long as we have the materials and a blueprint. 3D printers create all sorts of objects by laying down a single layer of material at a time, stacking piece after piece like pyramids, until you have the entire thing before you, seemingly created out of thin air.

3D printers have been used to create everything from toys to electronics casing to flatware, so it’s no surprise that jewelry would eventually be added to that list. Debuting the idea of 3D printed jewelry on the runway is none other than Kimberly Ovitz, marking a futuristic fashion first.

Inspired by the intricate exoskeletons of exotic insects and other wildlife, the skin-hugging pieces include this $250 necklace and pieces that clasp to the ears.

Ovitz is excited at the prospect of using 3D printing to offer her jewelry for sale around the world immediately following a show, and allowing for jewelry to be produced on-demand with no need for bulk orders from the manufacturer. Ovitz currently stands as a trailblazer in 3D printed jewelry, but there’s little doubting that the rest of the industry will soon follow her lead.
