With all this talk of parabens and chemicals in our favorite beauty products, it makes sense to take a step back and try greening our routine a bit. You’ve probably already started making changes to your skin care lines, but did you ever consider what you were putting on your hair?

Just like your skin, what you put on your hair is absorbed into your body and affects it. Rather than release ozone diminishing CFC’s with every spritz of the hair spray and drying your scalp with heavy gels, try these alternatives.

Sweet Hair Spray

If you’ve got a sweet tooth, then maybe you’ll have sweet locks too. This simple hair spray alternative doesn’t contain any harmful ingredients, nor will it release damaging CFC’s into the environment.
All you will need is:

  • 4 teaspoons of sugar
  • 1 cup hot water
  • 2-4 drops of your favorite essential oil for an extra sweet scent
  • Fine mist spray bottle

Bring your water nearly to a boil, then remove from heat. Add in your teaspoons of sugar and stir until they dissolve. Allow this mixture to cool.

Once your sugar water has cooled, pour it into your spray bottle then carefully add in your drops of essential oil. Give it a little shake then spray.

Depending on how strong you want your hold to be, you can adjust the level of sugar to water. The more sugar you add, the more it will hold. If you don’t use hairspray often and want to preserve your cocktail a bit, add a tablespoon of vodka. It will keep it bacteria
free and add to its shelf life.

CocoGel

If you are loco for coconut oil like me, then you are going to love this next super simple alternative.

Rather than use a store bought hair gel, opt for coconut oil straight up. Coconut oil is malleable because it hardens at cooler temperatures. You can rub a little between your fingers then mold your hair as you would a regular gel.

The trick with this one is to not overdo it. If you add too much oil, you will end up looking like a T-Bird from the movie Grease.

What I love most about this on is that it is budget friendly and great scalp and hair moisturizer. You can’t go wrong!

Beer Infused Volume

Nothing like a cold beer at the end of a hard day’s work, am I right? Instead of drinking it all, save some and pump up your locks with a beer infused volumizer.

All you need is:

  • 1 ½ cups regular beer (do not use light)
  • ¼ cup water
  • 1 tablespoon lemon or lime juice

Just mix all of your ingredients together in a spray bottle and shake it up. The beer’s yeast will help pump up the volume and the lemon or lime juice will prevent you from smelling like a brewery.

If beer isn’t for you, try using coconut milk. All you do is spray, fluff and style as usual for added volume. This is probably the simplest solution to flat, lifeless hair.

Now that I’ve given you no reason to blow your dough on hazardous hair products, which one are you going to try first?
