214: How to Talk About Ordering Drinks in Mandarin Chinese

By Learnmandarinnow

Most people like to drink when they are out socialising and having fun. Yet more and more people are realising the dangers of driving when they have had too much to drink, and abstain from alcoholic beverages. It’s a great topic to be able to talk about with your colleagues in Mandarin Chinese—and make sure to stay safe if you plan to drive!

In this Podcast, you will learn:

(i) To select a suitable drink if you are offered one

(ii) How to explain that you can’t drink alcohol when driving a vehicle

Dialogue:

Colleagues are discussing what to drink:

(在酒吧)

(Zài jiǔ bā)

(at the bar)

A: Nǐ xiǎng hē diǎn shén me?

What would you like to drink?

B: Zhè er yǒu shén me hē de?

What do they have here?

A: Zhè lǐ de jī wěi jiǔ tiáo de bù cuò, nǐ xiǎng cháng cháng me?

Their cocktails are very good. Do you want to try one?

B: Wǒ yī huǐ er děi kāi chē, hái shì hē bù dài jiǔ jīng de yǐn liào ba.

I need to drive later. I will just drink non-alcoholic drinks, thanks.

A: Ó, nà……yǒu xiān zhà guǒ zhī, kě lè xuě bì, bīng kā fēi.

Okay. There is freshly squeezed juice, Coke, Sprite, and iced coffee.

B: Wǒ lái bēi bīng kā fēi ba!

I’ll have a cup of iced coffee.
