1987 Malts Of Scotland Bowmore 30 Years Review

1987 Malts Of Scotland Bowmore 30 Years, in the simplest of terms is a single cask of Bowmore that was aged in a refill sherry butt from 1987 – 2017. It hit the market at $650 which simultaneously seems like a lot of money and not a lot of money considering what 30-year-old whisky goes for these days; this would explain why it sold out so quickly.

In Malts Of Scotland’s Words: 1987 Malts Of Scotland Bowmore 30 Years

“True masterpieces of the Scottish art of whisky distillation which have been matured in outstanding casks are the diamonds of our choice. Our search in the hidden corners of those many Scottish warehouses is occasionally rewarded by the discovery of such diamonds which meet our stringent cask selection criteria.

For us, it is not an everday affair to sample such superb whiskies but a privilege and very special highlight which we like to share with you through extremely limited bottlings from „Warehouse Diamonds“ range.” (c’mon guys you can do better than that!)

1987 Malts Of Scotland Bowmore 30 Years Review

EYE
Copper

NOSE
Darkly sweet and smoky; a surprising amount of peat in this dram considering the age. Big layers of dark fruit, leather, cinnamon, nuts, ash, cocoa and copper. It’s bold and sweet and smoky… it’s awesome.

PALATE
Darkly sweet and smoky; again, more smoke than I would have imagined due to its age and bold layers of dark fruit, leather, dark sweets, spice, ash, cocoa, nuts, copper and orange peels. Yes please!

FINISH
Long sweet and smoky fade of dark fruit, leather, nuts and spice.

BALANCE, BODY & FEEL
Great balance, full round body and a warm satiny feel.

OVERALL
1987 Malts Of Scotland Bowmore 30 Years is… awesome. It’s full, it’s deep, it’s dark it’s rich and I want to drink more of it; lots more of it. The dense aroma feels like it’s coating my nasal passages and a bit of water makes it come across richer and stickier. When it hits the palate it’s sticky and thick with sherry and the most decadent fruit cake you can imagine. I’m a big fan of this 1987 Malts Of Scotland Bowmore 30 Years, it’s a stellar example of what a Bowmore can be.

SCORE: 90-92/100 (A-, not consumed at home)
