#1804 – Getting to Know: The Three (Major) Airline Alliances

When flying Garuda Indonesia, you would hear the purser/flight attendant says “… Garuda Indonesia, a member of SkyTeam …”. And when you look closely at the plane, you might notice a small logo near the nose or the front door; something like this:
What exactly is SkyTeam? In short, SkyTeam is one of the three major airline alliances in the world. And what is an airline alliance? Well, the term is self-explanatory. According to Wikipedia:
An airline alliance is an aviation industry arrangement between two or more airlines agreeing to cooperate on a substantial level. Alliances may provide marketing branding to facilitate travelers making inter-airline codeshare connections within countries. This branding may involve unified aircraft liveries of member aircraft.
So, for once, an airline in an alliance is able to offer a much wider network beyond its own operational network by using the network of other airline(s) in the alliance.
