1792 Sweet Wheat Bourbon Review

1792 Sweet Wheat Bourbon Review

1792 Sweet Wheat Bourbon is the final, recently released, OB from the Barton distillery and as you can tell from the name it’s a wheater. Other whiskeys in the wheater category would be Maker’s Mark, VanWinkle, Weller and Rebel Yell. When crafting a wheated bourbon the traditional rye, which gives bourbon a spicy kick, is replaced with wheat which gives it a softer sweeter character… which is exactly what the distillery says about it.

In the Distillery’s words: 1792 Sweet Wheat Bourbon

“Crafted with sweet and delicate wheat instead of the more traditional rye, this bourbon is quite distinctive from most. The soft wheat delivers a subtle and smooth taste with gentle layers of flavor. Each sip expresses a harmony of sweetness and dryness”

Let’s see if their words hold up. On to the 1792 Sweet Wheat Bourbon review!

1792 Sweet Wheat Bourbon Review

EYE
Ruddy oak

NOSE
Rich with dense notes of sweet, cherry heavy dark fruit, oak, caramel corn, cocoa and bits of leather, toasted grains, spice and vanilla. It’s a fantastic aroma.

PALATE
Cherry heavy dried dark fruit, vanilla, caramel corn, oak, spice and a bit biscuity with light notes of toasted grain, butterscotch and leather. In a way it reminds me of a cherry vanilla coke.

FINISH
Long fade of toasted grains, toffee, leather, oak, spice and dark fruit.

BALANCE, BODY & FEEL
Carries a nice balance, round body and a heavy warm feel.

OVERALL
1792 Sweet Wheat Bourbon is great. It’s not mind-blowingly complex, but it’s rich, dense and has a nice oaken backbone supporting and balancing the sweeter notes. This is a whiskey I could easily sip on any time and ties with the 1792 Full Proof Bourbon as my favorite of the 1792 line. One of the things I like the most about it is that it’s harmonious.

The aroma transitions nicely into the flavor which transitions nicely into aftertaste. Sometimes a whiskey’s aroma will differ from the plate and the experience ends up feeling a tad disjointed, like you’re experiencing two different whiskeys. That’s not a problem with the 1792 Sweet Wheat Bourbon as each step sets the stage for the next through a daisy chain of cherry heavy dark fruit, dark sweets, oak and grain.

SCORE: 88/100 (B+)
