13th Interview With Ava DuVernay & Oprah Winfrey Being Released On Netflix

Netflix has announced it plans to release a 30-minute special featuring an interview between filmmaker Ava DuVernay and Oprah Winfrey about the filmmaker’s 13th documentary which just earned an Oscar nomination.

According to THR,  A Conversation With Oprah Winfrey & Ava DuVernay will be available to U.S. Netflix subscribers Thursday (the 26th).

In the sit-down, Winfrey talks to DuVernay about her filmmaking process, her interest in exploring the incarceration of African Americans in the U.S., how she went about getting the expert interviews featured in the doc, the current state of race relations in the U.S., the film’s reception worldwide and DuVernay’s advice for the Trump administration.

13th, which premiered at the New York Film Festival, explores the history of racial inequality in the U.S., specifically how the country produced the highest rate of incarceration in the world, with the majority of those imprisoned being African American.

The title refers to the 13th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, specifically the following progression: “Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States.”
