12 Days of Anime #8: The Wise Words of Mori Summer

What would you say if you discovered the middle-school girl you knew in class claimed she was over 1,500 years old, is able to communicate with faeries, and has written a large and extensive blog called the Mabinogion detailing how important love is in the world? Cute, in that kind of deluded child way? Just plain bonkers who needs serious help? Or you could always follow her and see her as a mentor and tutor? Well, just like some other characters in Chuunibyou Demo Koi ga Shitai!, Shinka Nibutani, now turned into a high-school beauty queen, was desperate to put her middle-school Chuunibyou lifestyle firmly behind her. See in the first season, her chuunibyou form was only a mere mention by former devotee Sanae Dekomori, so it only came in this year’s second season where we finally discovered the truth about who Shinka Nibutani (oh wait, sorry, Mori Summer) really was: someone who didn’t want to fight, and saw goodness in all things. So…it only took high school for her to realize how much of an idiot she was behaving, then?

But Sanae is an extraordinary character herself, especially when it comes to Shinka/Mori Summer. Exclusive to the anime, she simply believes that Shinka is ‘making up’ her claims of being Mori Summer. So despite of all of this hatred they have towards each other, they can’t help but find some kind of connection. A love/hate kind of thing, maybe? Perhaps, but Sanae was such a devoted worshiper of Mori Summer so I guess even someone who even remotely looks like the person she adored can do strange things. As we found out in one very memorable filler episode, where Sanae was seeing someone who genuinely was a fake Mori Summer, so thus Shinka was pushed into her old Mori Summer ways to ‘win her back’. Why she wanted Sanae back, we weren’t quite sure, but Kyoto Animation being the studio they are when it comes to crushes and subtle love, what did we all expect?

We won’t see anymore Chuunibyou demo Koi ga Shitai! seasons again, I’m sure of that; Yuuta and Rikka’s relationship is as good as settled thanks to the power of KyoAni, and thus there’s no real reason to carry on from there. And so the light novels will carry on. Such a shame then that Sanae never featured in them; the whole Shinka/Mori Summer x Sanae pairing would have made the fan fiction writers go more crazy than they already are when it comes to them two. But as for Mori Summer herself? She still lives in the spirit of Shinka, regardless of whether she wanted it or not.
