If you were 11 years old and made mayor of a small town in Texas for a day, what would you do? Rename part of main street after Justin Bieber, of course.

Caroline Gonzalez won a contest to be mayor for a day as part of a project to get young people interested in municipal government. She was nominated by her father for her active participation in the student council and other community projects. Her first act as mayor was to rename a part of Main Street, “Justin Bieber Way” after the 17-year-old heartthrob and singer. The sign, which cost $20, was erected for one day only before the street returns to normality.

Unfortunately, the Biebs did not attend the opening ceremony; city officials said they were unable to contact the megastar. But is the renaming a sign of the coming Bieb-pocalypse or simply an stark example of why 11-year-olds should not be allowed to govern?

  • 11-year-olds are irrational. When questioned on her gubernatorial decision, Caroline told E! News, “[I] like his music and I like him. And I thought, why not have a street in my hometown named after my favorite singer?” The news has set Twitter alight with one user commenting, “There’s a street in Texas named Justin Bieber Way. BRB, GONNA MOVE ON THE STREET.”
  • Not everyone pleased. Twitter user Mikeh Bradshaw commented, “[C]hild ‘Mayor’ Renames Street for Justin Bieber. I don’t want to live on this planet anymore”.
  • Just have to laugh. Max Read, writing at Gawker, chose to satirise the event, calling Caroline an “11 year old despot”. He re-imagined her speech to have political motivation, joking “[W]e must meet head-on every challenge of the bourgeoisie in the ideological field and use the new ideas, culture, customs, and habits of the proletariat to change the mental outlook of the whole of society. Also I just really like Justin Bieber and I thought it would be cool if we had a street in our town named after him.”
