10 Ways to Make Time for a Loved One: How to Show You Care

Busy schedules, errands and work commitments seem to eliminate any free time, making it is easy to lose sight of showing your gratitude to a friend or family member. Nurturing these relationships is important for your personal growth and staying connected to those who matter most to you. Take a proactive approach and focus on the following gestures and gifts to demonstrate how much you care for a loved one.

Send a Letter

With the advent of technology, most interactions feel automatic and sterile. Sending a sentimental message in a handwritten letter is a great way to let a friend know how you feel about him or her. Write and mail the letter when it isn't a holiday or birthday and the element of surprise will leave a loving and lasting impression.

Reach out by Calling

To keep those long-distance and local friendships strong, pick up the phone and call to find out how your loved one is doing. Often times we tend to text or email, but communicating electronically is never a good substitute for personalized attention. Make the phone call when you know you have ample time to talk without interruptions.

Make a Homemade Dinner or Dessert

A homemade meal is an unforgettable gesture. Your loved one will appreciate the effort, planning and preparation required in making dinner from scratch. If cooking isn't your strong suit, try making a special dessert.

Send a Gift Basket or Favorite Wine

When you want to show you care, but can't necessarily do it in person, setting up a special delivery will let a special someone know you are thinking about him or her. Send a gift basket featuring your friend's favorite wine for a gift that is equal parts thoughtful and indulgent.

Plan an Afternoon Movie Outing

Who doesn't love a chance to kick back and relax with an afternoon matinee? Plan ahead by sending a Fandango movie gift card in the mail and encourage the recipient to pick out a date, time and movie to enjoy. With a gift card in hand, your friend or family member will find it difficult to resist.

Treat a Friend to a Cup of Coffee

Sometimes it isn't practical to set up an in-person coffee date, but sending a Starbucks e-gift card lets a friend know you are thinking about him or her. With one click, a gift card is delivered automatically via email.

Remember Important Milestones

Take time to call or send a card with a special "Happy Birthday" or "Happy Anniversary" message. A sentimental card on an important occasion is a pleasant surprise to receive in the mail. If a loved one receives a promotion or other accolade, mark the occasion with a flower delivery at home or work.

Plan a Night Out

Treat a friend or family member to a night out at his or her favorite restaurant. A planned dinner out during the middle of the week will help both of you look forward to a special evening during a hectic work week.

Listen

With the amount of distractions in our day-to-day lives, sometimes a loved one needs a place to vent. It is up to you to offer your full attention and put away your phone and other devices to let him or her know you are listening without checking your email or surfing the web.

Pitch In

Hard times are inevitable and your friend may need to count on you for help through a transition. Offer to set up a meal service, babysit the kids or make a grocery run. Practical help goes a long way in showing your interest in caring for his or her well being.
