10 Days of Giving: Day 2

By Afternoonlattes

Unfortunately I didn’t have the opportunity to do anything significant with my time on thursday and even today- its been a rushed weekend for sure. However, in honor of black friday I thought I would do the exact opposite of what most of the world is doing today and instead of purchase new clothes, id go through my closet and get rid of what I don’t necessarily need. Of course Im dying to shop right now, after all its my favorite thing to do, but i promised myself I wouldn’t shop and I would donate instead.

So before I could look for clothing to give away, I had to organize my closet (its been a while since I last organized it). After i finished I looked through all my clothing and shoes and said to myself “if i was at the mall right now, and this was a shop, what would I actually buy from my wardrobe”. That had to be the most helpful thing I could do, because before thinking of it that way I could barely find one thing to donate. I really love my clothes so whenever I tell myself Im going to donate its always  hard task for me. As selfish as it sounds, its true and its definitely something i need to work on.

After about an hour of looking through my closet, I found 10 items that I did still love but new i could live without. Then I took the items to a Zaman International Donation box found outside of the mosque i attend and donated the clothing. For anyone who hasn’t heard of Zaman International, “Zaman International provides hope to marginalized women and children whose basic needs would otherwise not be met. Our services include provision of food and clothing, shelter, dignified infant burial and skills training to prepare women to help themselves”. Iv volunteered with the non-profit organization numerous times before and their initiatives are one to be recognized. Aside from helping woman they help families as well. Each week Zaman delivers fresh meals to families who cannot afford dinner, a great organization indeed.

What I liked most about donating some of my clothing is that I got rid of something that I love (i mean who doesn’t love clothes?) and even though it was hard for me when it shouldn’t be, it felt good to do something helpful! Im confident that the clothing I donated will help young women and girls who cannot afford to dress themselves and that to me is an amazing feeling.

BTW: sorry for the lack of pictures, my battery died and Im too lazy to charge it! I will be adding in pictures soon…hopefully tomorrow or sunday!
